Engineer.
Born at Rossburn on 3 January 1930, son of Rev. Douglas Brooks Sparling (1894-1980) and Reita Wood Bambridge (1895-1982), his childhood was spent at Flin Flon and Morris before moving to Fort Garry. After obtaining a BSc degree from the University of Manitoba (1953), a MSc degree from the University of Toronto, and a PhD degree from Washington University (St. Louis, Missouri), he returned to Winnipeg.
He worked for a time with the Manitoba government, designing and constructing water treatment facilities, and mentoring and supporting plant operators. The latter part of his career was spent as a professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Manitoba. After retirement, he was a CESO volunteer advisor in China, Indonesia, and Peru.
On 25 November 1955, he married Barbara Anne “Barb” Young at the First Presbyterian Church and they subsequently had five sons. The family had a summer cottage at Winnitoba.
He died at Winnipeg on 30 October 2011. He is commemorated by the Art Sparling Bursary at the University of Manitoba that supports graduate level students in Civil Engineering.
