Memorable Manitobans: Clarence Benjamin “Ben” Schoemperlen (1913-1997)

Physician.

Born at Strathclair on 13 March 1913, son of August John Benjamin Schoemperlen (?-1959) and Hannah Baldrow (?-1961), during the Second World War he served as a Lieutenant Colonel with No. 5 Canadian General Hospital and was overseas for five and a half years working as an internist and endoscopist. Later he specialized in respirology and bronchoesophagology.

Returning from military duty, he was a founding partner of the Manitoba Clinic (1946) and lectured at the University of Manitoba. He was Vice-President of the Manitoba Medical Association and a member of the D. A. Stewart Centre at the Health Sciences Centre. He was a team doctor for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and a medical advisor for Great-West Life.

On 30 December 1939, he married Margaret Ruth Corner (?-1993) at St. Boniface and they had a son and two daughters. They had a cottage at Whytewold and he was a member of the Winnipeg Winter Club and Niakwa Country Club.

He died at the Deer Lodge Centre on 5 May 1997 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
