In 1921, George Thomas Koester, Donald Henderson “Dan” Bain, and Herbert Torrence Hazelton met to discuss the possibility of forming another golf course in Winnipeg. On November 1921, a final decision was made to move forward with development and to name the club “Niakwa” meaning “Winding River”. They selected a site east of St. Annes Road and south of Fermor Avenue, the formal address of which is 620 Niakwa Road.

Internationally renowned Canadian golf architect Stanley Thompson (1883-1953) arrived in Winnipeg in November 1922. He used the Seine River which winds its way through the property and the ravines to create a championship caliber golf course.

The club opened for play in 1923.
