Chartered accountant, community activist.
Born in Romania on 31 March 1921, while his parents Joseph and Clara Peltz were en route to Canada from Russia, the family settled in Winnipeg’s North End. He attended St. John's Technical High School, and then the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1947. That same year, he married Marym “Mary” Borodkin (1924-2009), with whom he went on to have four children. In 1949, he earned status as a professional Chartered Accountant, and soon became a founding partner of the firm Sandell and Peltz, where he carried on his profession for 25 years. He was appreciated by his devoted clients for his skills and dedication as a financial advisor.
To show his gratitude to Winnipeggers for their assistance to his family when they immigrated to Canada, he became active in the Jewish community, beginning with membership in the B'nai Brith, one of Canada’s oldest human rights organizations. When the new West Kildonan Lodge was founded, he became its first President and an executive member of the Central Canadian Council. As treasurer of the B'nai Brith Camp Development Committee, he played an active part as they acquired a campsite at Kenora, Ontario. He also served as President of Jewish Child and Family Services (1967-1969). When the Winnipeg Jewish Community Council (WJCC) was founded in 1974, he was elected Treasurer, and then appointed as Executive Director serving the whole Jewish community for the next twelve years. At the same time, he served as acting Executive Director of The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. He and his wife and family were also very active in the North End’s vibrant social life.
On his retirement from the WJCC in 1986, he continued on as Executive Director with the Foundation. Upon retiring from that position, he was appointed Executive Director Emeritus. He continued to serve the Foundation as a member of the Board of Governors and of the Strategic Planning Committee. He was also an executive member of the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre and the Rabbi Rappaport Education and Lecture Series Trust.
He enjoyed family vacation times at the Winnipeg Beach cottage, and later at Sandy Hook, as well as road trips and travelling with his wife to Mexico, Israel, England, France, Portugal and Greece. The couple spent winters at Palm Springs, California, and later at Victoria, British Columbia.
He died at Winnipeg on 23 November 2012 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
