Restauranteur, hotelier.
Born at Bilston, Staffordshire, England on 30 October 1871, son of Francis Nokes (1831-1908) and Emma Hatton (1833-1880), he came to Canada in 1887. He operated a restaurant and bought the Winnipeg Hotel (1904) and Tremont Hotel (1910). On 3 June 1891, he married Margaret Cecilia “Maggie” O'Hara (1868-1948) at Winnipeg and they subsequently had four sons: Arthur Henry Nokes (1893-1956), Francis Laurence “Frank” Nokes (1895-?), Adolphus Nokes (1897-1897), and Maurice Standley Nokes (1899-?). He died at Norfolk, Virginia on 17 July 1954.
