Memorable Manitobans: Melvin “Mel” Myers (?-2026)

Lawyer.

He graduated from the Manitoba Law School in 1962 and worked for three years as a crown attorney with the office of the Manitoba Attorney General. He then practiced labour law as a partner with Abraham Lionel Weinberg in the firm Myers Weinberg. He was made a Queen's Counsel (1972). He was the first Chair of the Manitoba Human Rights Commission (1974-1978) and appeared before numerous other commissions. He taught classes in labour relations and administrative law at the University of Manitoba and a bar admissions course on criminal evidence. He chaired the labour relations subsection of the Canadian Bar Association (Manitoba Branch). He co-founded and was President of the Canadian Association of Labour Lawyers. He retired in 2001, after which he chaired the Automobile Injury Compensation Appeal Commission. He served as President of the YMHA Community Centre and was a member of the Board of Regents at the University of Winnipeg.

He is commemorated by the Mel Myers Labour Law Conference established in 2023 by his former law firm.
