Memorable Manitobans: Ethelbert Eldridge “Bert” Meek (1877-1918)

Physician and surgeon.

Born at Five Islands, Nova Scotia on 26 November 1877, son of Benjamin Meek (?-1905) and Jeanne Ella Meek (1851-1933), he and his family came to Virden in 1885. He was educated at Manitoba College and the Manitoba Medical College then began a medical practice at Altona in 1901 where he was also the medical health officer. On 15 October 1902, he married Hattie Louise Higginbotham (?-1969) at Virden and they had a daughter. He was a member of the Assiniboia Club, Canadian Club, AF & AM, Odd Fellows, Liberal party, and Presbyterian church. His recreations included hockey and football. During the First World War, he served as a Lieutenant with the Canadian Army Medical Corps, attached to the 95th Saskatchewan Rifles. He was killed in France on 30 May 1918.
