Memorable Manitobans: James Wallace “Wally” McKenzie (1914-1999)Grain buyer, grocer, MLA (1966-1969), MLA (1969-1973), MLA (1973-1977), MLA (1977-1981), MLA (1982-1986). Born at Plenty, Saskatchewan on 16 June 1914, he completed high school there and, on 5 August 1939, married Hilda Rose Pritchard (1915-2014). They would eventually have three children. In 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving until receiving a compassionate discharge after the 1945 death of his father. He moved with his family to Inglis in 1946 and worked as a grain buyer for the Reliance Grain Company. In 1948, they purchased a general store and operated it for 30 years. He was a member of the Inglis United Church, Russell Masonic Lodge, and Royal Canadian Legion. He was elected to the Manitoba Legislature at the 1966 general election, representing the Roblin constituency. He was re-elected in 1969, 1973, 1977, and 1981. He did not stand for re-election in 1986. He died at Russell on 11 September 1999 and was buried in the Asessippi Cemetery. Sources:Obituary, Winnipeg Free Press, 13 September 1999, page 27.
