Memorable Manitobans: John Stewart McInnes (1894-1978)

Physician and surgeon.

Born at Park Hill Ontario on 28 June 1894, son of Alfred McInnes (?-?) and Margaret McInnes (c1874-1923), he was educated in Winnipeg. An honorary graduate in medicine (1916), he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in June 1918 and served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps until 1919. He did postgraduate work in New York City and Chicago then returned to Winnipeg in 1920.

He joined the surgical staff at the Children's Hospital where his specialization was surgery of harelip and cleft palate. He rose to become Chief Surgeon and was also Chief Surgeon at the Grace Hospital (1939-1954). He served as President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (1940).

On 10 November 1923, he married nurse Margaret Hannah Ramsay (1895-1988) at Vancouver, British Columbia and they had three children: John Stewart McInnes (1924-1972, father of Robert McInnes), Margaret McInnes (wife of John Larson), and Donna Marie McInnes (1930-2024, wife of William Bruce Parrish). He was a member of Westminster United Church and St. Charles Country Club.

He died at his Winnipeg home, 1203-155 Wellington Crescent, on 19 November 1978 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
