Memorable Manitobans: Herbert Allan “Bert” Luckhurst (1923-2011)

Business consultant, community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 29 July 1923, one of two sons of Helen Maude Erskine (1896-1978) and George Luckhurst (1877-1954), he grew up on Brock Street, which at that time was at the western fringes of the city. In 1946, he obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba.

He then joined the Manitoba civil service and became a Director in the Department of Industry and Commerce. Moving to the business world, he worked first as the manager of Pioneer Electric’s Brandon operation, and then as manager of McLean Machinery in Winnipeg. For the majority of his career, he was self-employed as a business consultant with his firm, Resource Developments Limited. His involvement with volunteer activities included serving as a Director of the Red River Exhibition, President and Director of the St. Norbert Foundation (now the Behavioural Health Foundation), and Commodore of the Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club. He also spent many hours coaching hockey.

He and his parents and siblings spent summers at the family cottage at Boundary Park on Lake Winnipeg’s west shore, and when a teenager, he met Theodora Mae “Dora” Tweltridge (1926-2010) there. They married in 1948 and went on to have three children. Eventually, their own young family spent summers at Boundary Park until the mid-1960s. In the early 1970s, they built a cottage on St. Helena Island at Lake of the Woods. They also enjoyed their box-car ski chalet at Agassiz Ski Resort in winter and travelled extensively.

He died at Winnipeg on 21 July 2011 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
