Memorable Manitobans: Hugh McKay “Mac” Laughlin (1919-2012)

Military aviator.

Born at Cartwright on 8 January 1919, son of John Bell Laughlin and Harriet Margaret McKay (1885-1965), he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Force before the Second World War and retired in 1968 as a Squadron Leader. During the war, he was a flight instructor in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan and, later in his career, he worked in air traffic control. He and wife Gwendolyn "Gwen" Hopper (?-1992) had two daughters: Linda Gwen Laughlin (wife of Donald John McIntosh) and Leyah Laughlin (wife of Ralph McFadyen, mother of Hugh Daniel McFadyen). He was a member of Christ Church Anglican. He died at Cartwright on 12 January 2012.
