Memorable Manitobans: Alexandra Vladimira Krett “Alice” Korchik (1909-1995)

Educator.

Born at Winnipeg on 20 May 1909, daughter of Maria “Mary” Capacovitch [Caparowicz] (c1889-1965) and James Nicholas Krett (c1884-1965), she attended Wesley College. She graduated from the University of Manitoba (BA, 1933) and worked with Herbert Fuller Roberts of the Botany Department in the University in the development of drought- and rust-resistant wheat. By the latter 1930s, she became a teacher.

Her teaching career included work in rural Alberta (?-?, two years) and nine years in rural Manitoba, including at St. Andrews School (1936), Brokenhead School (1938-1940, Principal), Queen Elizabeth School (1940-1941), and Central St. Paul School (1941-1942). Around 1944, she married William “Bill” Korchik (?-1994) and they had a son.

She also worked for four years as a statistician with the Department of National Defence before resuming her teaching career. She acquired a Kindergarten eduation specialization and taught 13 years in the Winnipeg School District, including at Ralph Brown School (1960-1961) and Shaughnessy Park School (1964-1969). She had retired by the mid 1970s and was Secretary-Treasurer of the St. Norbert School Board.

Still residing at Winnipeg in 1994, she died at Waterloo, Quebec on 13 September 1995.
