Memorable Manitobans: Loftur Johan Jorundson [Loptur Jorundsson] (1861-1952)

Building contractor.

Born at Hrisey, Iceland on 16 June 1861, he came to Canada in 1888 and worked as a building contractor in Winnipeg. He was married twice, first on 1 June 1890 to Jonina Gudron Ericksdottir (1866-1941) with whom he had six sons, all born in Manitoba: Eirikur “Erick” Jorundson (1891-1938), Sigtryggur Jorundson (1893-?), Jorundur Jorundson (1895-?), Ingi Gunnar Jorundson (1898-?), Thorhallur “Hallie” Jorundson (1900-?), and Julis Jens Jorundson (1906-1979). On 1 January 1944, he married widow Jona Gislason (?-1956). He died at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital on 5 March 1952 and was buried with his first wife in the Brookside Cemetery.
