Memorable Manitobans: Freida Bernice Jorheim (1931-2026)

Educator, historian, community activist.

Born on the family farm near Inwood on 11 May 1931, daughter of Flossie Hicks (1899-1997) and John Kunzelman (1891-1939), she attended Rondeau School where, after receiving teacher training at the Manitoba Normal School, she returned to as a teacher as well as at Cossette School (1966-1967).

In 1954, she married Bert Jorheim (1925-1993) who worked as a farmer, electrician, and bus driver. They had a son and two daughters. She was active in the Home and School Association, Figure Skating Club, and 4H. She spent 32 years as a Child Development Worker in the Teulon Day Care and throughout the Interlake.

She was a role model for local historians, having shared her time and talents with her community for over 50 years. She welcomed numerous visitors into her home and helped them to trace their family roots in the Interlake region of Manitoba. She helped to take an overgrown pioneer cemetery at Union Prairie and make it a source of local pride. She maintained the former Rondeau one-room schoolhouse for community gatherings, children’s day camps, and an annual picnic. She was active in Inwood’s centennial celebrations in 2006. And she contributed to two local history books: The Interlake Beckoned (1980) and another finished around 2014.

In recognition of her service, she received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012) and Lieutenant Governors Award for Historical Preservation and Promotion (2014).

She died at Selkirk on 20 October 2026 and was buried in the Inwood Lutheran Cemetery.
