Memorable Manitobans: Owen Tudor Hughes (1915-2004)

Cleric.

Born at Winnipeg on 22 August 1915, son of John Hughes (c1879-?) and Mary Jane Jones (c1881-?), he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and trained as a flight engineer but worked as a radar instructor. After the war, he returned to Winnipeg and studied Theology at United College. In 1952, he was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Canada. He served at Knox United Church at Plumas (1951-?) then moved to Toronto, Ontario for a period. He was the minister at Charleswood United Church from 1960 until retirement in 1980. For a short period, he was interim minister at St. Stephens Broadway United Church.

On 4 July 1953, he married Mary Fern Bartlett (c1923-1971) in the United College Chapel and they subsequently had a son and a daughter. The family lived at 289 Oakdale Drive, Charleswood.

He died at the Victoria Hospital on 12 August 2004 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
