Memorable Manitobans: Harry Elliot Gordon (1919-2004)

Lawyer, community activitist.

Born at Chowan, a small village in Russia on 26 September 1919, son of Hymie and Helen Goldenberg, he came to Winnipeg with his parents in 1921. He grew up in the city’s north end, met Anna Mitchell, whom he married in 1943, and they had three children. With his wife’s support, he was able to attend law school and graduated in 1950. He practiced law for 54 years, first with Kushner, Breen, and Gordon, then as a sole practitioner in collaboration with Morse Silden and Ron Olesky, and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1983. He served on the Board of Regents for the University of Winnipeg, and was a member of the Manitoba Transport Board and Public Utilities Board. He worked with the nine communities of the Southeast Development Resource Council and was recognized for those contributions with the Harry E. Gordon, Q.C., Memorial Bursary at the University of Winnipeg. He died at Winnipeg on 4 November 2004 and was buried in the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery.
