Memorable Manitobans: Sarah Mahan Wood “Sara” Edwards (1886-1976)

Educator.

Born in the Rural Municipality of Montcalm on 5 April 1886, daughter of Catherine Mahan (1846-1908) and Samuel S. “Sam” Wood (1846-?), she attended teacher training (1906) at the Central Normal School in Winnipeg. Her teaching career included rural and suburban locations around Manitoba, including at Morton School (1910-1911), Britannia School (1913-1917), and in the East Kildonan School District No. 14 at Polson School (1920-1923), Lord Wolseley School (1923-1924, Principal), and Lord Kitchener School (1927-1929). She left the classroom in December 1929 and, on 1 January 1930, married Andrews Lett Edwards (?-1958) at East Kildonan. They had no children and farmed in the Rural Municipality of Thompson before retiring to Manitou by the 1950s and then finally to Miami by later that decade. She died at the Morden District General Hospital on 17 July 1976 and was buried in the Miami Cemetery.
