Child psychologist.
Born at Asbury Park, New Jersey on 23 December 1935 to Austin and Muriel de von Flindt, he grew up there and then attended Lafayette College at Easton, Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Monmouth College at West Long Branch, New Jersey. One of his professors inspired him to shift his major from philosophy to psychology, and he continued on to earn a Masters degree and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Arizona State University. While there, he married fellow student Marilyn Nelson (1935-2022) after a two-month courtship, and they went on to have two daughters, including Kristin de von Flindt (c1965-2014).
After completing a one-year internship at the University of Colorado Medical Center at Denver, the couple moved to New Jersey, where he joined the staff at the Henry Pollak Clinic at West Long Branch. He was also a postdoctoral fellow at the Menninger Clinic at Topeka, Kansas. Following a year of private practice in Houston, Texas, he was recruited to Winnipeg in 1970, to establish the first child psychology internship program at the University of Manitoba Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine. He was the program's first training director and was the department's only doctoral-level child psychologist for a number of years.
During his long tenure with the department, he served as a mentor to generations of child psychologists in Winnipeg, and continued as a supervisor for child psychology for the internship program until his retirement. He was also an expert in child psychotherapy. Along the way, he did a brief stint with the University of Manitoba Northern Medical Unit, an experience he especially treasured.
He enjoyed photography, breadmaking, spending time at the lake cottage at Matlock, and possessed a wide-ranging interest in music.
He died at Winnipeg on 20 September 2012.
