Memorable Manitobans: Vera Marie Sopuck Derenchuk (1930-2019)

Educator, administrator.

Born at Winnipeg on 24 October 1930, daughter of Czech immigrants Mary and Joseph Sopuck, she began a career in education as a teacher of English and drama at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. She served as Superintendent of Schools for the Transcona Springfield School Division (1972-1990), one of the first women in Manitoba to hold this administrative position. She was a member of the boards for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the Victoria Hospital. She and her husband, Peter Derenchuk, had two children and resided at 41 Salme Drive. She died at Winnipeg on 1 November 2019.
