Memorable Manitobans: Samuel “Sam” Davidson (1886-1965)

Sports executive.

Born at Belfast, Ireland on 20 June 1886, he came to Canada in 1911. He was for many years the Secretary-Treasurer of the Canada Football Association and Manager of the Carruthers Football Park. He served in the military during the First World War and Second World War.

On 18 September 1911, he married Mary Victoria Atcheson (?-?) at St. James Anglican Church. They subsequently had three sons: John George Davidson (1914-?), Frederick Samuel Davidson (1916-?), and Charles Robert Davidson (1923-?). He was a member of the St. John's Curling Club and Orange Order (Golden West Lodge)

He died at the Deer Lodge Hospital on 4 November 1965 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery. In 1994, he was inducted posthumously to the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame as a builder of the sport of soccer.
