Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Edward “Ted” Cuddy (1930-2014)

Physician.

Born at the Grace Hospital on 10 June 1930, son of Alfred Loftus Cuddy (1894-1956) and Dorothy Ada Johnson (1902-1985), he was raised at Sanford. He received a medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1954 after interning at the Winnipeg General Hospital for three years. He was Chief Resident at the Winnipeg General Hospital (1956-1957) and was Professor of Medicine and Head of the Section of Cardiology, Head of Cardiology (1962-1984), Director of the Electrocardiography Department (34 years), Director of the Holter Laboratory (24 years), and Associate Director of the Intensive Care Unit (13 years) at the Health Sciences Centre. He carried out pioneering cardiovascular research and was involved in some of the first clinical trials of pacemakers in Manitoba. In 1956, he married Beverly Rose “Bev” McNamara (1933-2019) and they had four children. He died on 4 November 2014.
