Memorable Manitobans: James Thomas Adam Clarke (1873-1943)

Physician.

Born at Millbrook, Ontario on 10 October 1873, son of Reverend Richard and Frances Clarke, he was educated at Queen’s University (Kingston). In 1901, he commenced practising medicine at Lauder and later at Cypress River where he was medical health officer from 1901 to 1906. He came to Winnipeg in 1907 where his practice was located at 211 Somerset Block. In 1901, he married Alice Maud Sadler (1873-1942) at Lindsay, Ontario and they had two daughters, Frances Clarke (1906-?) and Helen Sadler “Pat” Clarke (1907-1997, wife of Charlie Precious). The family lived at 500 Wardlaw Avenue. He was a member of the AF & AM, Methodist church, and Conservative party. He died at Winnipeg on 23 January 1943 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
