Memorable Manitobans: Ivan Ciaputa (1915-2012)

Butcher, community activist.

Born at Halychyna, Ukraine on 24 October 1915, he spent some time in England before immigrating to Canada in 1952 with his wife Maria Marczuk (1925-2011) and their one-year-old daughter. Later, they had a son.

He was very active in the Ukrainian community, being a long-time member of Saints Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, and at one time the Holova (President) of the Ukrainian Youth Association. He also served as President of the Canadian Ukrainian Institute Prosvita, a community organization whose goal is to meet the cultural needs of Ukrainians in Manitoba. Working with youth was one of his passions and he served as a mentor to many over the years.

He was for a time Manager of North Winnipeg Co-operative, and then ran his own business for many years as a storekeeper and butcher. In 1980, he retired from Eaton’s, where he worked as a butcher. He was also an avid hobby farmer, horse lover, and beekeeper.

He died at Winnipeg on 3 June 2012 and was buried in the All Saints Cemetery.
