Memorable Manitobans: Ethel Bendit (1902-1995)

Educator.

Born at Winnipeg on 3 October 1902, daughter of Rachael “Raisa” Hasker (1872-1937) and Louis Benditt (1866-1958), she attended King Edward School and graduated from the University of Manitoba (BA, 1925). She began her education career in rural Manitoba where she was Assistant-Principal of Gimli School (1926-1927) and taught at Teulon School (1927-1934). She then joined the staff of the Winnipeg School District, teaching at Norquay School (1934-1937), Strathcona School (1937-1938), Lord Selkirk School (1938-1939), Aberdeen School (1939-1951), and Technical-Vocational High School (1951-1969).

She was politically active in the Young Womens’ Liberal Association serving as Vice-President (1937-1938), Acting President (1938), President (1938-1941) as well as Youth Council delegate (1937) and National Youth Congress delegate (1940). She was Second Vice-President (1943-1944) of the Young Liberals in Manitoba / Junior Section of the Manitoba Liberal Progressive Association [renamed 1943], served a three-year term (1943-1946) with the Manitoba Federation of Liberal Progressive Women, and was also Assistant-Secretary (1956-1957) of the Winnipeg Teachers’ Bowling League.

She died at Winnipeg on 23 December 1995 and was buried in the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery.
