Scientist.

Born on 28 November 1960, he received BPE (1981) and MNRM (1987) degrees from the University of Manitoba, then a PhD degree (1992) in arctic climatology from the University of Waterloo. He returned to the University of Manitoba in 1993, spending 29 years doing research on the Canadian Arctic, serving as founding Director of the Centre for Earth Observation Science and a Canada Research Chair in Arctic System Science, and overseeing a large research group.

In recognition of his many contributions to Canadian science, he was inducted into the Order of Canada (2016), became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2016) and Royal Canadian Geographical Society (?), and received an honorary doctorate from Laval University (2017). A mistaken identity over the 2013 presentation of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to filmmaker David Stuart Barber resulted in the short film Will the Real Dave Barber Please Stand Up?

He died suddenly at Winnipeg on 15 April 2022, survived by a wife, three children, and a grandchild.
