Born at Maydaneiske, Ukraine on 10 March 1894, the eldest of ten children, he came to Canada in 1913 and worked on harvesting crews then as a carpenter building grain elevators until he learned English. He took courses in drafting and eventually became a building contractor.
On 7 November 1925, he married Mary Yakimovich (1907-1988) at Winnipeg and they had two children: Frank R. Babienko and Tania L. Babienko (wife of Norman Anderson). He was a member of the Ukrainian Labour Temple, Winnipeg Curling Club, and West Kildonan Senior Mixed Club. He wrote poetry in Ukrainian, had two books published, and wrote a three-volume autobiography in English.
He died at Winnipeg on 27 June 1997 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
