Memorable Manitobans: Curtis Terry Assiniboine (1964-2008)

Emcee.

Born in 1964 to Rosemary Winona “Kunshi” Woods (?-2010) and James “Jimmy” Assiniboine (1927-1985), his home was Long Plain First Nation. With his wife Ilona, he had six children. He was well known for his role as an emcee at numerous powwows across the continent. Intuitively, he was able to create structure and organization in the various communities he visited, and to gather the people for those events. He always travelled with his Indian joke book in hand and was ready to use it in the most appropriate ways to delight and entertain any audience he addressed. He was a storyteller, comedian, and valued representative of his community and his people. He died at Long Plain on 11 August 2008 and was buried in the Long Plain First Nations Cemetery.
