Buchanan School was the second school constructed in the St. Charles School District, intended to expand the facilities of St. Charles School. A six-classroom building, designed by the architectural firm of Pratt Lindren and Associates, opened in 1963. Two years later, an addition increased its size to twelve classrooms with a small gymnasium. Eventually, the gymasium was divided into an art room and music room. When a new, larger gymnasium was built, the renovation also included a science room, staff room, larger administrative offices, and two kindergarten rooms.
