Peter D. Carney

Educator, community activist.

Born at Dunrea, son of Norbert Carney (1912-2009) and Marie Emilie Souyri (1915-2012), he became a teacher in the St. James Assiniboia School Division, serving as Principal of Buchanan School (1967-1973), Butterworth School (1973-1979), Linwood School (1979-1981), and Assiniboine School (1981-1987). He was active in the Manitoba Teachers Society and New Democratic Party. After his retirement, he was a long-time school trustee for the St. James Assiniboia School Division, serving as Vice-Chair (2006-2008) and Chair (2008-2010). He ran for a federal seat in a Winnipeg riding in 1997 and 2004, being defeated each time. In 2003, he was nominated to run for a rural seat in the Manitoba Legislature but withdrew for health reasons.
