Professor, MLA (1969-1973).

Born at Winnipeg on 8 April 1936, son of Louis Maurice “Lew” Gonick (c1903-1961) and Minnie Chernick (c1904-1967), he attended Kelvin High School, the University of California (Los Angeles), and Columbia University. He held an academic appointment at the University of Saskatchewan where he founded the socialist journal Canadian Dimension in 1963. He later returned to Winnipeg as a professor of economics at the University of Manitoba. In the 1969 provincial general election, he was elected as a New Democratic candidate for the Crescentwood constituency, defeating incumbent Edward Gurney Vaux Evans, and served a single term. He was not a candidate in the 1973 general election, choosing to return to academe. He retired in 2001.
