This Winnipeg school was a $2.4 million joint project between the Winnipeg School Division (WSD) and the City of Winnipeg with planning and agreements dating back to the early 1970s. A shared-use agreement extended to community access and use by local residents of the gymnasium and several multi-purpose rooms within the school, in addition to outdoor facilities located on the school grounds. The city provided $433,900 in funding.
The facility was designed by the local architectural firm of Haid Haid Donner in consultation with School Division architect William I. “Bill” Enns. The primary building contractor was W. W. Construction Limited, with subcontracts issued to W. H. Milley & Associates (structural), Klein and Dashevsky Limited (mechanical), and L. P. Williams & Associates (electrical). Work was ahead of schedule for a planned opening date of 1 September 1977 when the building was hit by arson on 7 June 1977. The damage was assessed to be around $250,000.
Elementary students enrolled here were bused temporarily to Margaret Scott School, Luxton School, Lord Nelson School, and Lansdowne School for the 1977-1978 school year. The school opened, in a reduced capacity, in February 1978. It was fully finished and operational for the 1978-1979 school year.
