Located in the west end of the St. Boniface Cathedral Cemetery, this monument is known as “Le Poilu,” a word for French soldiers during the First World War. It features a stone base with a statue of a standing soldier holding branches aloft. The sculptor was Eugene Benet of Paris, France, and Nicolas Pirotton and A. C. LeGrand were the builders. It is dedicated to the Francophones of western Canada who died in the First World War and Second World War. The monument was dedicated on 11 November 1920 and speaking at the ceremony were Lieutenant Governor James Aikins, Major-General Huntley Douglas Brodie Ketchen, and MLA Joseph Bernier.
Renovated by the veterans of Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 15, the monument was re-dedicated on 16 June 2007 at a ceremony attended by Senator Maria Chaput, Andre Ferrand (Senator of the French Abroad), and Jacques Janson (Delegate of the French in Canada).
