Historic Sites of Manitoba: Argue House (299 St. John's Avenue, Winnipeg)

This 2½-storey wood frame, wood plank and wood shingle, Queen Anne-style house is on St. John's Avenue in Winnipeg. Measuring 22 feet by 36 feet, it was designed by local architect Johann “John” Schwab and built in 1905 by contractor William Henry Reid at a cost of about $4,000, for owner Andrew Harvey “A. H.” Argue (1868-1959). He was a real estate agent.

At the time of a 2020 site visit, the house had been extensively renovated from its original appearance. The exterior was covered with stucco, the original grand wraparound porch has been removed, and it had been converted into a duplex. However, it retained two distinctive, rounded pointed arch-style windows on the gables.
