Memorable Manitobans: Lois Miriam Freeman Wilson (1927-2024)

Cleric.

Born at Winnipeg on 8 April 1927, youngest child of Edwin Gardiner Dunn Freeman and Minnie Ada Davis (1890-1969), the family moved to Thunder Bay (Ontario) where she spent her early childhood. They returned to Winnipeg around 1940 where she attended United College. Ordained as a United Church minister in 1965, she served ministries successively in Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Kingston, and Toronto.

On 9 June 1950, she married Roy Fyfe Wilson and they had two daughters and two sons. She served as Moderator of the United Church of Canada, President of the Canadian Council of Churches, President of the World Council of Churches, an independent member of the Senate of Canada, Special Envoy to Sudan, a member of Canada’s Nuclear Waste Environmental Assessment Panel, and Chancellor of Lakehead University.

She died at Toronto, Ontario on 13 September 2024.
