Memorable Manitobans: John E. Welsted (1935-2009)

Geographer.

Born at Norwich, England on 6 December 1935, he taught high school at Maidenhead, England and Oromocto, New Brunswick, and received BSc and PhD degrees from the University of Bristol and an MSc degree from McGill University.

In 1965, he came to Brandon where he was a member of the Geography Department at Brandon College (later Brandon University) until retirement in 1997. He co-edited with John Everitt and Christoph Stadel the book The Geography of Manitoba, Its Land and Its People (1996) and the compansion website Manitoba From the Air.

He was married twice, first to schoolteacher June Welsted with whom he a daughter and a son before they separated. In August 1991, he married widow Kathleen Ann Georgison (1938-2010).

He moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 2002 and died there suddenly on 21 September 2009.
