Memorable Manitobans: Joseph Peretz Weizman (1920-2020)

Rabbi.

Born at Lodz, Poland in November 1920, his parents and siblings were killed during the Holocaust. He returned to Lodz after the Second World War, met his wife Ryvka “Riva” Weizman (?-2013), and they married in 1946. They moved to Israel then, in 1953, to Winnipeg. He worked as a teacher at a local Jewish day school while completing his rabbinical studies. In 1960, he became Rabbi of Bnai Abraham Synagogue where he remained for over 50 years as the congregation grew into one of the largest in western Canada. He also served briefly as Rabbi at Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue in Toronto, Ontario. He moved to Toronto in 2009 and died there on 21 April 2020.
