Auctioneer.
Born at Brooksby, Saskatchewan on 26 September 1922, son of John Wachniak and Lena Beraniska, the family moved to Winnipeg in 1930 where his father established the J. Wachniak and Sons Auction business. He operated auctions all over Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In 1943, he enlisted in the Canadian Army, serving in Italy with the Perth Regiment, 5th Division, 9th Army. Following his military discharge, he returned to Winnipeg and trained as an upholsterer, later opening his own upholstery business on Selkirk Avenue. Eventually he returned to the family auction business until retirement in 1987.
In 1947, he married Ann Budzan and they had two sons and a daughter. He was a member of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and the Royal Canadian Legion. In 1964, he was elected Sergeant-at-Arms and represented the Legion and events around Manitoba. He died at his Winnipeg home on 19 March 2011 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
