Educator, community activist.
Born at Vincennes, St. David's, Grenada on 27 October 1942, daughter of Inez Hazzard, on 30 June 1968 she married Jerome Strachan and they emigrated to Canada in October 1968. Subsequently, they had a son and a daughter. After holding jobs in health care and office administration, she attended the University of Manitoba and received a BEd degree. She taught at Gordon Bell High School for some years.
Active in the St. John XXIII Parish, she was a lector and eucharistic minister, taught catechism, and sat on the finance committee. She was a member of the prayer group at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church and was its treasurer. She was a founding member of the Grenadian Association of Manitoba and the Council of Caribbean Organizations of Manitoba. She was instrumental in establishing the Caribbean Culture Centre, served as an ambassador of the Caribbean Pavilion at Folklorama, and was a board member of the Folk Arts Council of Manitoba. In recognition of her community service, she received a Premier’s Volunteer Service Awards (2006) and King Charles III Coronation Medal (2025).
She died on 21 February 2026 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
