Zoologist.
Born at Madison, Wisconsin on 30 December 1936, son of Drs. John and Gertrude Stewart, he grew up at Clinton, Iowa where he developed a passion for fishing and natural history. He received a BSc degree at Colorado A&M University, a MSc in Marine Biology at the University of Miami, and a PhD degree in Zoology at the University of British Columbia.
He came to Winnipeg and taught in the Department of Zoology at the University of Manitoba for 34 years. He was a founding member of Fish Futures and served as a scientific advisor on fisheries to the Manitoba government. He received a Canadian Recreational Fisheries Award (1998). He co-wrote The Freshwater Fishes of Manitoba (2004).
He and wife Bessie Louise Stewart (1939-2017) had two daughters and a son. An amateur woodworker, he built dogsleds, gun replicas, and fishing rods. He served as President of the Manitoba Sled Dog Association for eight years and was keenly interested in hunting and target shooting. He died at the Victoria General Hospital on 3 July 2011. He is commemorated by the Dr. Ken Stewart Memorial Scholarship in Aquatic Biology and Conservation sponsored by Fish Futures.
