Memorable Manitobans: Clarence Hilton “Clancy” Smith (1906-1964)

Grain merchant.

Born at Winnipeg on 18 November 1906, son of Sidney Thomas Smith and Emily Jordan Frogley (1881-1950), he received an Arts degree from the University of Manitoba and was associated with the grain exporting firm of Smith Vincent and Company, formed in 1950 as a successor to the Reliance Grain Company.

He and wife Margaret Edith Richards (1909-1988, daughter of Stephen Elswood Richards) had a son and two daughters. The family lived at 202 Lamont Boulevard. He was a member of St. George’s Anglican Church, St. Charles Country Club, Manitoba Club, and Winnipeg Squash Club.

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 22 November 1964 and was buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery.
