Memorable Manitobans: Amy Smith Simpson (1907-1979)

Educator.

Born at Winnipeg on 7 March 1907, daughter of Lydia Varney (1873-1971) and Gilbert Henry Smith (1874-1944), she grew up at 446 Wallasey Street in St. James and attended Bannatyne School where her father was Chairman of the School Board. She, along with her two sisters, Kathleen Vera “Kitty” Smith (1901-1981) and Winnifred Hazel “Freddie” Smith (1909-1988, wife of B. Saunderson), all became teachers. Amy graduated by the late 1920s from the University of Manitoba with a BA degree, taught at Baldur School (1929-1930), and was Principal of Minto School (1930-1931) and Dominion City School (1931-1933). She later married Maurice Irvine [Irvin] Simpson (1906-1967) and moved to British Columbia. She died at the Castlegar District Hospital on 6 January 1979 and was buried locally in the Park Memorial Cemetery.
