Memorable Manitobans: Dieter Hermann Schwanke (1936-2020)

Farmer, publisher.

Born at Egelsbach, Germany on 16 May 1936, he immigrated to Canada in 1957 with the goal of becoming a farmer. He married Maureen Kennedy in 1960 and, the following year, moved to Binscarth where they published the Binscarth Express. The business was razed by fire in 1965 but he continued to publish the newspaper from his home for another year. He worked as an editor and writer, and spent five years as an information officer for the provincial government. He purchased a small farm at Clandeboye, later expanded with property at Balmoral. In 1978, he moved to Arrow River where he farmed for more than 40 years. He died on 24 June 2020.
