Memorable Manitobans: Albert Harry “Al” Schmidt (1937-2022)

Educator, archivist.

Born on 14 August 1937, he taught at Roseville School (1957-1959) before joining the teaching staff of the Rhineland School Division in 1962, serving until 1992. He taught Social Studies, Canadian History, and Accounting. After retirement, he did substitute teaching until 2011. He was a member of the Altona municipal council for 22 years, starting in 1975 and was Mayor of Altona (1995-1998). In his latter years, he was Archivist of the Altona and District Heritage Research Centre. He died on 28 September 2022, survived by his wife Marie, a daughter, and a son.
