Memorable Manitobans: Michael “Mike” Sawchuk (1900-1971)

Carpenter, railwayman.

Born at Mountain Road on 22 December 1900, son of ? Sawchuk and Wasilina Klymkiw, he worked as a master carpenter in northwestern Manitoba, under the influence of cleric and architect Philip Ruh, and constructed 14 church. In 1948, he moved to Transcona and worked as a carman for the Canadian National Railway until retirement in 1965. On 14 February 1928, he married Juliana Rose Hewko (?-1979) at Portage la Prairie and they had two children: Demetrius “Matt” Sawchuk and Catherine “Kay” Sawchuk (wife of F. Kuzyk). He died at his Transcona residence, 359 Regent Avenue West, on 17 November 1971 and was buried in the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
