Arthur David Santmier
|
Missionary, author.
Born at Frankfort Center, New York on 24 December 1881, he came to northern Manitoba as a missionary for the Free Methodist Church. He taught at the Cross Lake Reservation School for three months and at Oxford House and God's Lake for a year. He traveled extensively and, based on his experiences, he wrote Glimpses of the Northland: Sketches of Life Among the Cree and Saulteaux Indians (1905).
He later returned to the USA and, during the First World War, he served with the Friends Service Committee in Europe under former President Herbert Hoover. Returning home, he held pastorates at Farmington (New York), Woodsocket (Rhode Island), Knoxville (Tennessee), and Lynn (Massachusetts) before becoming field secretary of the Friendsville Academy at Friendsville (Tennessee) in 1945.
He died at his home there on 16 December 1951 and was buried in Knoxville. He was survived by his wife Alice, a daughter, and a son.
