Memorable Manitobans: Amy Jane Roe (1893-1969)

Educator, journalist.

Born at Arden on 22 December 1893, daughter of Annie Evelyn Webb (1869-1912) and John Wesley Roe (1866-1946), she taught in rural schools of Manitoba and Saskatchewan until 1918 when she joined the staff of The Country Guide. She was its Home Editor from 1921 until retirement in 1957. She served on the Manitoba Welfare Supervision Board (forerunner of the Department of Health and Public Welfare) and she was a member of the Canadian Women’s Press Club, Professional Business Women’s Club, Manitoba Historical Society, and Young United Church. She died at the Misericordia Hospital on 3 February 1969 and was buried in the Portage Hillside Cemetery.
