Memorable Manitobans: Herbert Clarence Ray (1902-1990)

Educator.

Born in the Belleview on 3 January 1902, son of Mervyn H. Ray and Margaret H. Spurr, he attended Belleview School, Pipestone School, Brandon Normal School, Central Normal School, and the University of Manitoba (BA 1932). His career in education spanned 44 years in Manitoba schools, including teaching (1925-1926) and service as Principal (1926-1935) of Wellwood School, after which he was Principal of Neepawa School (1935-1947), The Pas School (1947-1949), Dauphin Town School (1949-1955), and Fort Churchill School (1955-1963). He was President of the Manitoba Educational Association (1945-1946). On 8 July 1927, he married Marguerita Janet “Rita” Dodds (?-1992) in the RM of Albert and they subsequently had two daughters and two sons. He died at Brandon on 9 January 1990.
