Memorable Manitobans: Gustuf [Gustaf] Aron Quarnstrom (1875-1953)

Cleric.

Born at Jonkoping, Sweden in 1875, he immigrated to the United States in 1898 and graduated from a Chicago seminary in 1902. He went on to work as a missionary pastor (c1908-1908) at Malmo, Sweden before taking a posting at New Sweden, Alberta. He eventually arrived at Winnipeg where he was Pastor of the First Scandinavian Mission Church (c1924-1927). He was then promoted to the position of Superintendent (1927-1931) of the Scandinavian Mission Covenant of Canada, and also served as President (1936-1938) of the organization. He married and had four children: Roland Gustaf Quarnstrom, Reverend Leonard Quarnstrom, Ruth Quarnstrom (wife of Mr. Korup), and Harriett Quarnstrom (wife of Mr. Swanson). In Manitoba, he re-married Hannah Oteilla Berg (c1890-1947) at Minnedosa on 4 April 1923. They moved to Norquay, Saskatchewan in 1941, and in retirement, to Victoria, British Columbia in 1946. He died at Jonkoping, Sweden on 24 April 1953 and buried in an overseas cemetery.
