Memorable Manitobans: Miranda Orillia Gutzke Poyser (1892-1981)

Educator, community activist.

Born at Neustadt, Grey County, Ontario in May 1892, she came to Manitoba with her father in the early 1900s and attended Parkhill School and Maple Leaf School. In 1912, she graduated from the Central Normal School then taught at Emmeline School (1910-1911), Image Hill School (?-?), and Ninette School (1918, Principal).

On 15 February 1919, she married Trevor Poyser (1884-1961) at Winnipeg and, for 32 years, they operated the Poyser farm until retirement in 1951 when they moved into Austin. They had three children: Lindsay Earl Poyser (1922-1990, husband of Evelyn Boughton), Elsie May Poyser (1924-2017, wife of William Frank Sims), and Edward Arnold “Ted” Poyser.

A recognized community leader, she was Secretary of the Emmeline School District (20 years) and a member of the Austin United Church and Austin UCW (President). She was a director of the Austin Credit Union, a founding director of the Sprucedale School for Retarded Children, and President of the Austin Community Hall. For her community service, she received a certificate of merit from the Canadian Red Cross and was made a life member in the Austin branch of the Canadian Mental Retardate Association.

She died on 1 September 1981 and was buried in the Austin Cemetery.
