Memorable Manitobans: John Harry Oslund (1929-2014)

Journalist, publisher.

Born at Sioux Lookout, Ontario on 12 June 1929, son of Swedish immigrants Axel Sigurd Åslund (1895-1963) and Karolina Olivia Palmquist (1893-1987), he worked as a printer and linotype operator at the Reston Recorder (1950-1951), Estevan Mercury (1952-1954) and Gladstone Age-Press (1954-1955) before moving to Neepawa where he was co-manager, with John Campbell Huxley, journalist (1956-1968) and co-publisher, production manager, and editor (1968-1988) of the Neepawa Press. They sold the business in 1988.

On 24 January 1952, he married Randy Anna May Oslund (1934-2017, daughter of William John Abbey) at Reston. He served as President of the Neepawa and District Chamber of Commerce (1967), Neepawa Lions Club (1971), Manitoba Weekly Newspapers Association (1971-1972), Neepawa Barbershop Chapter of the SPEBQSA, and Neepawa Flying Club. He held leadership positions in the Neepawa Elks (Exalted Ruler, 1959-1960), East View Lodge Board, and Neepawa District Memorial Hospital Board. He was a member of the Neepawa Curling Club, Neepawa Golf and Country Club, and Neepawa Kaleidoscope Concerts organizing committee.

In April 1989, he received a Silver Quill Award from the Canadian Community Newspapers Association for 25 years of distinguished service to the newspaper profession.

He died at Neepawa on 9 April 2014 and was buried in the Riverside Cemetery.
